Mobile banking is rapidly transforming access to financial services in Malawi, giving more people in rural areas the ability to transact, save, and receive money without visiting a physical branch.
This shift has been evident through the “Transact and Win, Tikuoneni Kena Kake” promotion by Finca Malawi, which ran from 8th August to 30th September 2025. According to Finca Malawi Marketing Manager, Takondwa Chirwa, the campaign has seen a sharp rise in digital usage among customers, marking a major step toward financial inclusion.
“Since we started the promotion, we have witnessed an increase in customer usage of our mobile platform, with transaction volumes growing by over 80 percent. We registered more than 1,500 entries in the draw, which shows how customers are now comfortable using the platform,” Chirwa said.
She attributed the growth to Finca’s upgraded mobile system, which now enables interbank transfers to FDH, NBS, and First Capital Bank, allowing customers to transact easily and securely from anywhere in the country.
“In terms of financial inclusion, most of our customers live in remote areas where accessing a physical bank is difficult. Through mobile banking, they can now make transactions at home or wherever they are. This digital access is transforming how people handle money and helping bring more Malawians into the financial system,” she said.
Chirwa also urged rural customers to continue trusting digital platforms, noting that the system is secure and user-friendly. “We know some customers are still unsure, but we encourage them to embrace digital banking because it’s safer, faster, and reduces the risks of carrying cash,” she added.
The final draw of the promotion crowned Peter Moffat from Karonga Branch as the grand winner of K500,000, while five customers won K100,000 each and ten others received K50,000 each.
Moffat, who works with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, expressed gratitude, saying the prize had come at just the right time, as it will help his family get ready for their baby’s arrival. He said his wife is due to deliver soon, and they had nothing prepared before this unexpected blessing.
