Foundation for Community Support Services (FOCUS) has handed over a variety of learning materials to Lusekero Community-Based Childcare Centre (CBCC) in Karonga District to improve preschool service delivery.
The items donated include play materials, kitchen utensils, furniture, and other essential supplies aimed at enhancing early childhood education at the centre.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, FOCUS Executive Director, Kossam Munthali said the donation was made following guidance from the District Social Welfare Office, which identified a lack of play materials in most centres.
“We were informed that many CBCCs lacked playing materials, yet children learn better through play. That is why we brought these materials, to support effective learning and development,” said Munthali.
Karonga District ECD Coordinator, Mr. Katoto Kamwera, commended FOCUS for the gesture, describing the donation as timely and crucial for child development.
“ECD playing materials are very important because when children play, that’s how they learn. These items will help improve learning experiences in our centres,” said Kamwera.
In his remarks, Group Village Head Mwenekabwe thanked FOCUS for the support and assured that the community has put measures in place to sustain the interventions.
“We have formulated bylaws to ensure sustainability. For instance, any broken plate will be replaced immediately, and each child will contribute a development fee of K5,000 to help maintain the centre,” he said.
Lusekero CBCC, located under Group Village Head (GVH) Mwenekabwe in Traditional Authority (TA) Kilupula, is among seven centres benefiting from the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Project implemented by FOCUS with funding from Germany’s Chancen Durch Bildung.
